Aromatherapy for Anxiety – How Does It Work?

Aromatherapy for anxiety. How does it work? Is it real? That’s what I will be talking about today.

Aromatherapy is the practice of using essential oils to treat illnesses or reduce anxiety and promote relaxation. Essential oils are taken from plant. And you can use many part of the plants including the flowers, leaves, stalks, bark, rind, or roots. The oils are mixed with another substance such as a base oil, alcohol, or even lotion and then applied to the skin, sprayed in the air, or inhaled. You can also put it into a diffuser without mixing it with another oil and inhale it in the room. Many massage therapist will use it as part of a therapeutic massage.

Here are some popular essential oils that are used to promote relaxation
lavender (Lavandula angustifolia)
sandalwood (Santalum album)
orange blossom (Citrus sinensis)
lemon balm (Citrus limon)
rose (Rosa damascena),
jasmine
Clary sage (Salvia sclarea)
Roman chamomile (Anthemis nobilis)
Rose-scented geranium (Pelargonium spp.)
bergamot (Citrus aurantium)

Do molecules from the oil fragrances actually have a medical effect, or does the experiences of the fragrances bring you to a better and more relaxing space through an association with previous experiences of being in nature, for example? It would be much like listening to the music you grew up with; which brings people back in time, were they often have a personal sentiment for, due to their early life experiences.

  3. Hi Dr. Marks, I’m a certified aromatherapist who follows your channel and appreciates your content. This was a very accurate presentation, but one thing I wanted to add for your viewers is a few bath safety tips. 1.) Do not use citrus or other 10 carbon predominant essential oils in the bath including conifers because they are prone to oxidation when exposed to the hot water and can create skin reactions which are painful. 2.) Never use mint essential oils in the bath because they will cause painful inflammation of your private parts. 3.) and most importantly! …. Never drop neat essential oils into the bath, as oil and water do not mix and the neat oil floating on top can damage skin. Instead, mix a tablespoon un unscented soap ( you can even use free and clear dish soap or unscented castille soap ) – Mix unscented soap with no more than 5 drops of essential oils, then you can add mixture to the bath. – Blessings to you.
